What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a restoration that can replace a missing tooth. Implants are long-term solutions to many smile-related problems. They can last for decades without showing signs of wear or damage. Implants are often made of titanium that is surgically placed in the jawbone to replace the entire tooth, including the roots.
Why are Dental Implants needed?
Implants are most often needed when you are missing one or more of your teeth. Implants work on their own, so no surrounding teeth will need to be filed down to make room for a bridge. Implants are a cosmetic option for improving your smile as well as being functional. When you are able to replace missing teeth, it’s easier to eat and chew your favorite foods.
Who is a candidate for Dental Implants?
Most patients are good candidates for implants. You should have enough healthy bone structure in order for the implants to be able to be placed properly. If you have bone loss, we may suggest a bone graft prior to the surgery itself. The implant procedure is done quickly in our office at your own convenience.
What happens during the Dental Implant procedure?
The procedure will begin with a consultation regarding the implants needed as well as sedation that is used. Dr. Alfonso will then administer a local or general anesthetic to numb the area. An incision is made through the gums and a thin tunnel is made through the underlying jawbone. The implant is placed and you’ll be sent home with important aftercare instructions. You can expect to come in for several post-op checkup visits so that we can be sure the implant is healing properly. Once the implant has been given time to integrate and bond with the bone, we will have a crown, bridge or new denture made for the restoration in order to restore your whole smile.
