Fluoride Treatments

What are Fluoride Treatments?

Fluoride is helpful in protecting and strengthening your teeth. We offer fluoride treatments that can keep your teeth strong and healthy. These treatments are ideal for patients of all ages, but they are especially advantageous to children who may not have the best brushing and eating habits. Fluoride treatments are safe and treatment takes just a matter of a few seconds in our office.

Why are Fluoride Treatments needed?

We might recommend fluoride treatments if you do not get enough fluoride through the products you use or the water that you drink. You might benefit from treatment if you are prone to tooth decay or already have a lot of fillings in your mouth. We often advise children to have fluoride applied at each of their bi-annual dental checkup visits. The process can strengthen your teeth and provide you with a healthy, strong smile.

Who is a candidate for Fluoride Treatments?

Most patients who want fluoride treatments can safely have the procedure done in our office. Dr. Alfonso can examine your teeth first to determine if you might need or would benefit from fluoride treatments. For our pediatric patients, we typically recommend having fluoride added to the teeth at each checkup visit. Fluoride can be just as beneficial for our adult patients as well.

What happens during Fluoride Treatments?

The procedure will begin by applying liquid fluoride to the teeth. This is done carefully and easily, and no anesthetic is required. The fluoride may have a bitter taste to it, but this is only temporary and quickly dissipates. You should avoid drinking or eating anything for about a half hour following the appointment. This allows the fluoride to fully penetrate the teeth and provide the protection that you need and want. You can have the same treatment done at virtually any appointment that you have, and we can provide you with treatment at each of your six month checkup visits.
